Dachshunds might be small, but they've got the spirit of a dog three times their size - and their collar needs to be up to the job. The main thing to consider with this breed is neck and throat health. Dachshunds have relatively long, slim necks and are prone to pulling, which makes pressure on the throat a real concern with a traditional collar.

If you do use a collar, keep it lightweight and well-fitted like our 2.5cm combat collars. For most Dachshund owners though, a collar is best reserved for ID tags rather than lead attachment, with a harness doing the heavy lifting on walks.

Our collars are made to be comfortable on smaller breeds without sacrificing quality - because even a sausage dog deserves the good stuff.

If there's one piece of kit that every Dachshund owner genuinely needs, it's a good harness. This isn't just about control - it's about protecting your dog's spine. Dachshunds are uniquely vulnerable to IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), and a harness that avoids putting any pressure on the neck or back is one of the simplest ways to reduce that risk on every single walk.

Look for a harness that distributes weight evenly across the chest without pulling the shoulders forward or restricting their natural stride. A Y-shaped chest piece is ideal for keeping pressure away from the spine. Multiple adjustment points are important too such as the Tri Harness - Dachshunds have a very specific silhouette and not every harness accommodates it well.

Dachshunds have a lot of opinions about walks, and they're not shy about expressing them. Whether they're pulling toward a scent, planting their feet in protest, or deciding this particular route is simply not acceptable today, a lead that gives you gentle, consistent control is worth its weight.

For everyday walks, a lightweight lead with a comfortable handle keeps things easy without adding unnecessary bulk. For recall training, a long line is ideal - enough freedom for them to follow their nose without disappearing entirely.
