Slip on Harness

A slip-on harness is a dog harness that fits over the head and legs without buckles - your dog steps in and you pull it up into position. This makes it significantly faster to put on than a traditional clip-buckle harness, especially with wriggly dogs who resist the fiddling involved in threading clips. A correctly fitted slip-on harness is genuinely secure - dogs can't back out of it the way they can from a poorly fitted collar or vest-style harness. The operative phrase is "correctly fitted." Too loose and a determined dog will find the gap. Make use of the secure chest fit and adjustable points on our slip harnesses, so you can get the right tension without it being uncomfortably tight. Fit it properly and it stays on. Skip that part and you'll be chasing your dog across a field sooner than you'd like.

Two-finger rule: you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under any part of the harness, but no more. Too loose and they can wriggle free; too tight and you're restricting breathing and movement. Once you've fitted it, watch your dog walk for a few paces, the harness should move with them, not shift around or bunch at the chest. If it's sliding, adjust the straps. Size down, then use the adjustment straps to let it out to fit. A slightly smaller harness adjusted correctly will always be more secure than one that's slightly too large and can't be tightened enough, just make sure it’s not rubbing or digging into them. Always measure your dog (chest and girth) rather than going by breed or body weight alone. Body shape varies wildly, even between dogs of the same breed. A slip-on harness alone won't stop pulling, harnesses redistribute force rather than discourage it.
